The 38th World Artistic Gymnastics Championships were held at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia from 21 to 27 November 2005. Only the all-around and event finals were contested at this meet. There was no team competition; nations were permitted to bring up to four athletes to compete.
Format of Competition[]
Each country was allowed to bring only four gymnasts. All participating gymnasts competed in a qualification round. The results of this competition determined which teams and individuals participated in the remaining competitions, which included:
- The all-around competition, in which only the twenty-four highest scoring individuals in the all-around competed. Each country was limited to only two gymnasts in the all-around final. The all-around was contested two days after qualifications.
- The event finals, in which the eight highest scoring individuals on each apparatus competed. Each country was limited to two gymnasts in each apparatus final. The event finals were contested a few days after the all-around.

Notable Moments[]
- Chellsie Memmel became the third American to win the World All-Around title. She and the silver medalist, compatriot Nastia Liukin, also won scores that made one of the closest margins ever, separating them by only one thousandth of a point (Memmel: 37.824; Liukin: 37.823).
- Australia's Monette Russo won a bronze in the all-around, the highest all-around placing for an Australian gymnast. Russo also won the Longines Prize for Elegance that year.
