Format of Competition[]

The competition was split into junior and senior divisions, with both divisions competing in the same two days of competition, where the all-around was contested on both days. The gymnasts who specialized and only competed certain events had to scratch (touch the apparatus then salute the judges) on the apparatus they chose not to compete. The combined total at the end of the second day of competition would stand as the gymnast's final score.

The senior division of these Championships served as qualifications into the Olympic Trials. The top 8 in the all-around automatically advanced to the Trials, and several more could petition in.
