Carol Michelle "Chelle" Stack (born July 23 in Endicott, NY) is a retired American gymnast. She represented the United States at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and was coached by Bela & Marta Karolyi.

Career[]

Stack began gymnastics at a young age, and moved to Karolyi's in Houston at the tender age of 9 to pursue her dream to become an Olympic Champion. Stack burst on the elite scene in 1988, winning the bronze at the American Cup and earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. She helped the team earn it's fourth place finish (would have been third if not for a technicality deduction). Interestingly, three months before the U.S. Olympic team trials, Stack wanted to quit gymnastics but her mother said no. Stack did make the team, although a fall during her compulsory bar routine left her and her family disappointed.

Chelle spent the next several year after the Olympic Games competing successfully at the international level, while searching for the right gym to achieve her goals in gymnastics. Stack was certainly no stranger to the process of switching gyms. Prior to her move to Karolyi's, Stack worked with Russians Anna and Leo Belder at their gym in Pennsylvania. Two short years after arriving at Karolyi's, citing problems with Karolyi's assistant, Stack left and drifted from gym to gym in Houston for two years. Stack's progress slowed and she found herself back at Karolyi's.

Following the 88 Olympics, Stack moved back to the Belders' gym in Pennyslvania for casual training. She soon moved to SCATS, only to switch back to Karolyi's the following year. Stack remained at Karolyi's for one season, then switched to the newly formed Cypress Academy.

After an unsuccessful Nationals, Stack retired in 1992, a few months short of the Olympics in Barcelona. Since retiring from competition, Stack has earned success in the sport and in other areas as well. She spent two years at the University of Oklahama and earned her elite judging card.
