Irina Baraksanova (Russian: Ирина Бараксанова; born July 4 in Tashkent) is a retired gymnast from the former Soviet Union. She won a team gold medal at the 1984 Friendship Games and 1985 World Championships. Baraksanova's strengths lay in the artistry and grace of her work, even as she struggled with inconsistency.
Career[]
Baraksanova began gymnastics at the age of 7. She made her international debut at the 1983 Blume Memorial, winning silver in the all-around. In 1984, Baraksanova won the European Junior All-Around title, a bronze in the all-around at the Chunichi Cup, and a silver in the all-around at the Moscow News competition. Since the Soviets were boycotting the 1984 Olympics, they held their own separate Olympics, called the Friendship Games. Baraksanova was selected to the Soviet team and contributed to their gold medal finish.
In 1985, she was named to the Soviet Worlds team and won team gold with them. In 1986, she finished third in the all-around at the American Cup and first in the International Mixed Pairs. She retired soon after.
