Emily Whitehead (born December 12 in Mornington, Victoria) is an elite Australian gymnast and two-time (2020 and 2024) Olympian. She trains at Waverley Gymnastics Centre and has been a member of the National Team since 2014. She has represented Australia and the Pacific Rim Championships, Commonwealth Games, and World Championships.

Junior Career[]

2014[]

Whitehead made her international debut at the City of Jesolo Trophy in March, placing twenty-fourth in the all-around. At the Pacific Rim Championships in Richmond, Canada, she only competed on bars, beam, and floor, placed eighth on floor exercise, and helped Australia place fifth in the team final. At the Australian National Championships in late May, she won balance beam gold, all-around silver, floor exercise bronze, and placed fourth on bars and fifth on vault.

2015[]

Whitehead returned to the City of Jesolo Trophy, placing fourth with her team and on uneven bars, and eighteenth in the all-around. At the Australian National Championships in May, she won all-around, uneven bars, and floor exercise gold, balance beam silver, and vault bronze. In the fall, she was selected for the Japan Junior International. She only competed on uneven bars, and didn't make the event final.

Senior Career[]

2016[]

Whitehead was set to make her senior debut at the Pacific Rim Championships in Everett, USA, but tore a calf muscle in podium training and withdrew.[1] She returned to competition at the Australian National Championships in May, competing only on uneven bars, where she won silver.

2017[]

Whitehead competed the all-around again at the American Cup in March, placing eighth in the all-around. At the International Gymnix in Montreal, Canada, she won uneven bars silver, and placed fourth with her team, seventh on floor exercise, and tenth in the all-around. In November, she competed at the Cottbus World Cup in Germany, but didn't make the event finals.

2018[]

Whitehead began her season at the Melbourne World Cup in February, winning silver on vault. She was named to the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games, which were held on home soil in Gold Coast. She won team and vault bronze and placed fifth on beam. In May, she competed at the Australian National Championships, winning vault gold, all-around and floor exercise silver, and balance beam bronze. In September, she competed at the Australian Classic, winning all-around bronze and posting the second-highest score on floor exercise. She was named to the Australian team for the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, but Australia didn't make the team final, and Whitehead didn't make any individual events.

2019[]

In May, Whitehead competed at the Australian National Championships, placing fourth in the all-around. In June, she competed at the Flanders International Team Challenge in Ghent, Belgium, winning team silver and placing seventh in the all-around.

2021[]

After dealing with a back injury, Whitehead returned to competition at the Australian National Championships. She qualified as an individual to the Tokyo Olympics, and won all-around, uneven bars, and floor exercise silver.[2]

Tokyo Olympics[]

Whitehead competed in the third subdivision, starting on balance beam. She placed forty-fourth in the all-around, and did not advance to the individual events.

2022[]

Whitehead continued to compete after the Olympics, being named to the Australian team for the Stuttgart World Cup. Australia won team bronze, and individually, Whitehead won bronze on floor exercise and placed fourth on balance beam and seventh in the all-around. In late May, she competed at the Australian National Championships, winning floor exercise gold, all-around silver, balance beam bronze, and placed fourth on uneven bars. In August, she competed at the Commonwealth Games, winning team silver and floor exercise bronze, and placing eighth on vault and twelfth in the all-around.

2023-24[]

Whitehead competed at the World Championships in Belgium in October. She helped Australia place ninth in qualifications, which qualified a full Australian team for the Olympics.

The following year, she competed at the Stuttgart World Cup in March, winning silver with the Australian team. She was named to the Australian team for the 2024 Olympics.[3]

Paris Olympics[]

Whitehead competed in the fifth subdivision, helping Australia place tenth in qualifications. Australia did not advance to the team final, and she did not advance to the all-around or event finals.
