Samantha "Sam" Sheehan (born May 20, 1986 in Cincinnati, Ohio) is a former elite American artistic gymnast. She has represented the United States at the 2002 World Championships where she won bronze on the floor exercise.
Junior Career[]
In 2000, Sheehan competed at the J.O. National Championships in the Junior B division, placing first on the uneven bars and eighth in the all-around.
Sheehan competed at the U.S. Classic in July of 2001, finishing nineteenth in the all-around. She successfully qualified to the junior national championships in Philadelphia in August where she placed 22nd in the all-around.
Senior Career[]
Sheehan turned senior in 2002. In July, she attended the U.S. Classic in Virginia Beach, placing fifth in the all-around and winning gold on floor exercise. She attended the U.S. Nationals the next month in Cleveland, Ohio, placing eleventh in the all-around. She was chosen to represent the USA at the individual World Championships in Debrecen, Hungary. There, Sheehan made the floor exercise final and won the bronze medal.
In 2003, Sheehan attended the National Elite Podium Meet in Fairfax, Virginia, where she placed fourth on the uneven bars. She attended the American Classic in March, finishing sixth on bars. At the U.S. Classic in May she placed twelfth in the all-around and third on the uneven bars. She attended the USA vs Belgium dual meet in Houston, Texas, finishing second on vault and sweeping the rest of the competition, including winning gold with team USA.
In 2004, Sheehan again attended the Elite Podium Meet in New York, finishing first with her team and on the uneven bars. She attended the Athens Test Event in the Olympic arena, finishing sixth in the all-around and second on bars. Although she did not compete at the national championships, she successfully petitioned to the Olympic Trials. There, she competed all events except beam. She was not invited to the Olympic selection camp.
After elite, Sheehan competed NCAA gymnastics for the University of Georgia. UGA created the Sam Sheehan spirit award in her honor.[1]
