Marie Roethlisberger (born May 12, 1966) was an American artistic gymnast who represented the United States at the 1985 World Championships. She is the daughter of 1968 U.S. Olympic gymnast Fred Roethlisberger and brother of two-time Olympic gymnast John Roethlisberger. She is almost completely deaf due to meningitis as a child. Her floor routines were choreographed to music with heavy bass so she could feel the reverberations. Her best event was uneven bars.
Elite Career[]
Roethlisberger made her senior elite debut in 1981. In 1982 Roethlisberger became the U.S. National Champion on the uneven bars, as well as placing 9th in the all-around. In 1983 Roethlisberger just missed making the United States World Championships team; instead she was named an alternate. In 1984, Roethlisberger was named an alternate to the U.S. Olympic Team.
In 1985 Roethlisberger made her first World Championships team. She helped the team to a 6th place finish in the team competition and placed 17th in the all-around final. She also competed in the American Cup where she placed 4th in the all-around and won a gold medal on the uneven bars. The next year she represented the United States at the Goodwill Games in Moscow, where she helped the U.S team place 5th in the team competition. Individually, she did not advance to any finals. Roethlisberger retired from elite gymnastics at the end of 1986.
Post-Elite[]
Following retirement from elite gymnastics, Roethlisberger attended the University of Minnesota and competed on their gymnastics team. She was the 1990 NCAA uneven bar champion, a four-time All-American and a seven-time Big 10 Conference Champion. Roethlisberger was also a recipient of the Honda Award.
After graduating in 1991 she went on to earn her medical degree from the University of Minnesota. In 1998 she was inducted into the Minnesota Hall of Fame. She is currently a physician.
